NMRSD Faces Critical Budget Challenge

NMRSD is facing a significant budget shortfall due to rising costs that outpace allowable tax revenue growth under Proposition 2 ½. Without approval of a district-wide, cumulative 2.25% budget override, the district will be forced to eliminate 45 full-time teaching positions, leading to larger class sizes, reduced academic programs, and fewer student opportunities.

The North Middlesex Regional School Committee, in collaboration with town officials in Ashby, Pepperell, and Townsend, will host a community forum to discuss the formation of the FY 2025-2026 budget on Monday, Nov. 18.

The Committee is currently developing a budget for presentation to voters in their respective Annual Town Meetings in the spring. During the early phases it has become clear that the District will face a number of challenges next year as state and federal mandates drive annual budget increases amid declining enrollments.

As a result, the Committee may face difficult discussions including staff reductions and the closure of one or more buildings next year. Community input is vital and will guide the Committee’s decision-making. The School Committee is committed to providing parents, guardians, and stakeholders with impartial budget information throughout this process to ensure the public may make informed decisions.

At the forum School Committee members, Superintendent Brad Morgan, Central Office staff, and representatives of the three communities will address the challenges facing the District and town budgets and will stress that strong communities require well-funded schools and robust town services.

Presenters will accept a small number of questions from the audience as time allows.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the North Middlesex Regional High School Performing Arts Center, 19 Main St., Townsend. All community members are invited to attend.
